What is a fuel filter? 

A fuel filter consists of a filter element surrounded by a container so that fuel pumped into the outer chamber must pass through the element before going on to the fuel injectors.  Filters come in various sizes to stop different sizes of solid contaminants from passing through the element. Most light trucks come with 7, 5, or 4 micron elements, the smaller the number the better.

How does a fuel filter work? 

Fuel passes through the filter, the element removes solid particles that are bigger than its rated size.  This continues until it reaches its saturation point.  Which means, the element pores have been blocked to the point where the fuel pump pressure (or vacuum) causes solids, previously blocked by the filter, to pass through the element and into your fuel injectors. Damage begins.
