The new generation of "common rail" diesel engines provides more power, excellent mileage, and fewer emissions. Smaller electronic fuel injectors in each cylinder are the reason for these improvements. This design has made the fuel system even more critical to a proper running engine. Injector problems are caused by water or solid contaminants. Water gets in the injector tips when combustion occurs the water becomes super-heated steam which chips, cracks, or blows the tips off your fuel injector. Solids clog the fuel injectors causing poor combustion until it clogs enough to completely stop fuel flow which  then destroys the pistons and sleeves.
